High Definition (HD) Camcorders Facts and Info

High Definition Viceo CamerasI am a semi-professional photographer. Meaning I make enough to pay for my toys. I got hooked on video, and now I am on a quest to find a "semi-pro" HD camcorder. So I thought I'd share the research I am doing. Yes, the info on these pages are from company brochures and other almost public sources. The goal here is simply to gather a list and specs of HD camcorders without the clutter of other products. My pick so far? The Sony HDR-FX7. Buyer be aware - some companies I wouldn't buy from.

What to look for in a HD Camcorder?

MiniDVFirst there is storage. Most newer HD camcorders store on MiniDV tapes.

MiniDV, the most popular format at this, is supported by many camera manufacturers, including Sony, JVC, Panasonic and Canon.

Most people also agree that the quality of the video is better on MiniDV but this really depends on the quality of the HD Camcorder and the tape media.

HARD DRIVES. Recent HD camcorders have internal hard drives. Using the AVCHD format they can store 4 HDV hours on a 30Mb. hard drive. Only manufacturer's software will edit this format so far (Dec-2006) but it's expected that most NL video editing software will handle this format soon. Celulars info

Optical zoom versus digital zoom
As with digital still cameras, the optical zoom of a camcorder determines the number of times a camera can magnify an image through its lenses. Take note that this is different from digital zoom which simply takes a portion of an image and enlarges it, resulting in a loss of quality. Optically zoomed images enlarge the picture without sacrificing quality.

3CCD: Usually employed in semi-pro or professional camcorders, 3CCD cameras tend to produce better and clearer images due to the use of three CCDs instead of one to create the full image. However, cameras with one CCD are often good enough for most consumer purposes.

Image stabilization: You will most likely find this feature on most of the latest digital camcorders available. This helps correct image blurring due to hand shakes during recording.
