I have listed some of the ways I have found. I am sure there are lost more, but these make sense to me.

Before you offer your services - make sure you know your camera. One good practice is to go and tape a sporting event. Kids event.

Also make sure you have the right accessories like tripod and lights.

Weddings. (not me, to risky!)
Other events - parties, Bar Mitzvahs etc.

Sporting Clubs - club records of big games * match/play review and training tapes
Parents - children's party videos * records of their child's achievements (academic, sporting etc.)
Business - local shops and businesses provide potential customers with a video of services
Birthdays - First birthdays or 100th birthdays, these special events are sometimes wanted on video.
Reunions - Family reunions are sometimes wanted on tape.
Concerts - Local bands are always looking for concert footage for promotional and archival purposes as well as music videos. See also music videos.
Stand Up Comedy - Comedians, actors and other performers like to have a demo of their work to show.
